Club History 5 of 5

5. Recent History

Moving to more recent times, under current Chairman Mick Watmore, the club has seen some major works undertaken; new changing rooms incorporating a scorebox; renovation of the artificial wicket, a new roller, two new nets and an equipment storage area.
This has not been possible without the efforts of club secretary Bob Amon, who has managed to obtain grant money from a number of
different sources. If you include the fact that at the end of last season extensive work was carried out to level the square then it is apparent that Egham are a club with great ambition.

With this in mind current club captain Jamie Powell will be keen
to improve on last year when a mid table position halted a period
of two consecutive relegations forthe first team.

No history of Egham would be complete without reference to James (Jim)Warden who sadly died on 4th September 2012, he had been President of Egham for over 30 years.
Many Presidents are merely figureheads but Jim was very much a hands-on
President. He was instrumental in securing two long term lease agreements as well as reviewing and amending club rules during his tenure. He was a regular on the ground and would interact with members and visitors and was always keen to know just ‘who was winning’.
His commitment to youth cricket was documented earlier and up until his death he never missed his final on the first Sunday in September where he would present his cup. He was a traditionalist who demanded and maintained very high standards within the club as well as in his personal life. He will be sorely missed by all at Egham and will be extremely difficult
to replace.

As we celebrate our Centenary this year it is fascinating to look back over the efforts made by so many people to ensure that cricket has been played at Egham for 100 years and it is also a poignant time where we can look forward to what is in store for the club in the next century of it’s life.
